Not being on this list isn't a clean bill of health. Scammers change names and numbers. These checks protect you either way.
- See the actual unit in person.Not a video, not "a similar one." Go inside the exact apartment you're paying for.
- Meet the landlord or caretaker there.Ask neighbours who owns the house. For big advances, ask to see the indenture or title.
- Check the MoMo name before sending.The registered name should match the landlord or the agent you've verified. A different name is a stop sign.
- Ask for the agent's licence.Agents in Ghana are meant to be licensed by the Real Estate Agency Council. A real agent won't mind you asking.
- Get it in writing.A signed tenancy agreement and a receipt naming the landlord, property, amount and period.

How do rent scams work in Ghana?
A common pattern: someone posts photos of an apartment they don't own or control, agrees a price by phone or WhatsApp, and asks for an advance, inspection fee, or the full rent before you ever see the actual unit or meet the real landlord. Once you pay, they stop responding.
What are the warning signs of a fake rent agent?
Pressure to pay quickly because "someone else is interested", refusal to let you see the exact unit in person, a MoMo or bank name that doesn't match the landlord or agent, no written tenancy agreement, and an inability or unwillingness to show a Real Estate Agency Council licence.
